New England Clam Chowder

The Union Oyster House in Boston, Massachusetts is purportedly America’s oldest restaurant.  Whether truth or an exaggeration (hey, you can’t believe everything you read on a paper napkin), it is certainly a famous Boston landmark. To this day you can still sit at the horseshoe shaped bar – where it is rumored that Daniel Webster ate and drank more than his fair share of oysters and bourbon – and dine on some of the best oysters and clam chowder around.  Of course, bourbon is still available too! No, that’s not the actual bar.  It’s just a little display they have … Continue Reading →

Lemon Basil Marinade

I’m slacking again with updating this site. I was hoping to get at least one more recipe in before my recent trip to Walt Disney World, but time got away from me.  I’d like to say it won’t happen again, but it probably will.  I’ve been thinking up some new ideas for this site, though.  I might start including some non-recipe (but still food related) posts.  They’d focus on techniques I use in the kitchen, some of my most used gadgets, and things of that nature.  I’d also like to start featuring some “guest” recipes, but more on that later. … Continue Reading →

Pesto-Crusted Salmon Ready to Go In the Oven

I had what looked like an abundance of  basil growing in a flower box by a window sill. I decided to try my hand at making pesto. I found a recipe by Martha Stewart and gave that a shot. My “abundance” of basil was not enough for a full batch, so I cut the recipe in half. Sadly, the results were very bland. (Sorry, Martha!)  I wasn’t ready to give up, so I played around with it until I achieved the flavor I was going for. The truth is, I really like the pesto sold by Buitoni, so that’s pretty much what I was going for. … Continue Reading →

Maple Glazed Salmon with Walnuts

I used to get a dish smiliar to this at a restaurant called Bainbridge’s in Chelmsford, MA. Sadly, they’re no longer open. Last night I decided to try making it at home. I’m really pleased with the way it turned out. It’s a very simple dish to make, but it makes an elegant presentation. The flavors are very well balanced. It’s neither too sweet nor too spicy. Make sure not to let the salmon or the glaze sit in the baking pan once it’s removed from the oven. The maple glaze will start to set and you won’t be able … Continue Reading →

Fresh Calamari Stew

The leaves are turning, the temperature is dropping, and it seems to rain every other day. Fall is hear, and that means its time to think of comfort foods. I found this recipe in an old cookbook my mom had. It’s called Leone’s Italian Cookbook by Gene Leone, and was published in 1967. It has some amazing recipes, albeit a little outdated. I changed a few things here to improve the taste and make the instructions a little easier to follow. My husband and I were quite happy with the results! I served it with some penne to balance out … Continue Reading →
