German Chocolate Cupcakes | Dawn's Recipes

Let me preface this post with a little confession: I am not a big fan of cake. This statement has actually brought forth such comments as, “How are we even friends?” Cake lovers are a very passionate people! My only defense is that I grew up around birthday cakes from grocery stores and wholesale clubs. Stale, bland cake with sickly sweet frosting. Yuck and yuck. It was not unusual for me to pass up the cake at my own party. … Continue Reading →

A Simple Coffee Cake

This is a recipe my mom made frequently when I was growing up. It’s from 1949 edition of Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book. Since my mom wasn’t yet born in 1949, I’d guess that my grandmother made it for her growing up too. At least, that’s how I like to imagine it. What I love about this recipe is that I can make it at a moments notice. None of the ingredients are fancy. I almost always have everything I need on hand. It also comes together very quickly. You can throw it together in the morning, and … Continue Reading →

What? Another lava cake recipes? Isn’t every recipe blogger doing that? Okay, okay. But this is the last part of my red-themed-anti-Valentine’s Day dinner, and I wanted to post it. There are many different ways to make this moist, delicious cake with a melty center. Sometimes the center is made separately from the rest of the cake, sometimes not. (Hey, I might as well go to the pros.) It … Continue Reading →

New England Snowballs

I was looking for a cookie that would ship well, to pack with the gifts I mailed out to my brother’s family. I wanted to do gingerbread cutouts, but I wasn’t sure they would arrive intact. I was flipping through a book called “Homemade Christmas” by Mary Harvey Gurley, when I saw the recipe for Mexican Wedding Cookies. I decided these would work for a couple of reasons. They are small and a bit firm, so they’re unlikely to arrive in pieces. Also, they look like little snowballs. My brother lives in a much warmer part of the country than … Continue Reading →

Tony's Meat Cake

By now many of you have seen the Meat Cake made famous by Black Widow Bakery. If you haven’t seen it yet, you must check it out. I admit my first reaction was less than flattering, but I was so impressed with her creativity! I showed my fiancĂ© the site, thinking he’d find it as humorous as I did. You know, just another one of those jokes going around the Internet. Much to my dismay, his immediate response was, “When are you making me a meat cake?” I dragged my feet for a while, but eventually I broke down and … Continue Reading →
