Pizza Dough
avatar

Making your own pizza dough is very easy. You don’t have to knead the dough. Just stir the ingredients together and let it rise in the fridge over night. This recipe is based on the one in Rose Levy Beranbaum’s The Bread Bible. I made some changes in the amount, because the original recipe makes a very small pizza. I also had no instant yeast, so I converted the recipe for use with active dry yeast instead. You can see more pizza photos using this recipe in my pizza party post. Ingredients (weights are in parentheses): 1 1/2 cups … Continue reading

Margherita Pizza Sauce
avatar

This is a fantastic pizza sauce, and it’s very easy to make. Use fresh oregano if you can find it; it really does make a world of difference. This sauce is based on the recipe in Rose Levy Beranbaum’s The Bread Bible. Since I like to cut my pizza into 8 slices, I based the nutritional information on a single-slice serving. Of course, you’re going to want to eat several slices of any pizza made with this sauce! Ingredients: 1 cup (8 ounces) canned crushed tomatoes, with their juices 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 large garlic clove, chopped 1/4 … Continue reading

Happy Birthday and a Pizza Party!
avatar

I started DawnsRecipes.com one year ago today. That’s not to say I didn’t have a recipe blog before then. I just didn’t have one with an easy-to-remember URL. It didn’t always have such nice pictures with the recipes, and there was no commentary at all. It was basically just my recipe collection in an internet accessible format. I did migrate all those recipes to this site at the onset, and I’m going through them as I have the time to add the missing pictures and commentary. Today I’m doing something a little different. I’d invited my dad over for lunch … Continue reading

Bread Pudding

Ah, bread pudding! It’s one of the classics. This is bread pudding the way my mom taught me to make it. It’s a favorite of my dad’s, and he’s been dropping hints lately. So, I finally got around to making it for him. With all my bread baking lately, you think I’d have tons of stale bread left over, but it doesn’t last that long. So I bought some from a bakery and left the bag open for a couple of days. I just used sliced white sandwich bread for this, but you really need to buy it from … Continue reading

Mango Smoothie
avatar

When I was in Hawaii last September, one hotel we stayed at served tiny mango smoothies with breakfast every morning. They were delicious; I wished they hadn’t been so small. I found some beautiful mangoes while shopping at a farmers market last week and decided to try making my own. Ingredients: 1 small mango, cut into 1-inch pieces (about 1 cup of fruit) 1 cup milk 3/4 cup low-fat plain yogurt 1 tablespoon honey Directions: Lay the mango pieces on a plate and freeze for about 30 minutes. Place all the ingredients into a blender and puree until smooth, … Continue reading
