I’m not sure where the original recipe comes from, but my mom and my aunt have been making these for years.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup vegetable shortening
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 cup milk
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 2 cups flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup cocoa
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1/2 cup vegetable shortening
- 1 cup confectioner's sugar
- 1/2 cup marshmallow cream
For the Filling
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375ºF.
- Cream together shortening and sugar.
- Add egg, vanilla, and milk.
- Sift together dry ingredients.
- Gradually add liquid mixture to dry ingredients and blend well.
- Drop by teaspoon onto ungreased cookie sheet, creating 48 circles
- Bake for 8 to 10 minutes.
- Let cool before filling.
- Mix ingredients with spoon or mixer.
- Spread onto 24 of the circles. Top with the remaining 24.

My mom uses less butter and shortening, and more marshmallow and powdered sugar than the original recipe calls for, but she does it "to taste" so I don't have exact amounts.
