Big Daddy Google has decided to add a recipe search feature to their site. I have mixed feelings about this decision. When using their standard search my site has always ranked pretty high. In order for recipes to be included in this new search, however, special coding must be used in each recipe in order for the recipe to A) actually be identified as a recipe, and B) be correctly interpreted…what part is the ingredients, what part the instructions, etc.
What does this mean for a small recipe blog like mine? It means our recipes will not show up at all in the new recipes search. Not unless we take the time to recode all our recipes…a daunting task. For now, only the “big players”…Food Network, Epicurious, etc…are included in those results. I can’t argue, however, that this new tool does make recipe searches easier. The results are very clearly displayed with thumbnail pictures and summaries.
Fortunately I created this site with WordPress. There’s a plugin available for users of WordPress to help with the proper coding of their recipes. (Ironically, there is no such plugin at this time for Google’s own Blogger.) I still have to manually go through each recipe and make the changes, but at least the plugin means I don’t have to remember how to apply the proper coding to each section. I’m starting with the oldest recipes and working my way forward, so please be patient as I make the changes. Hopefully all my hard (well, tedious anyway) work will be rewarded with easier-to-search recipes for you.
