Cranberry Beans with Rosemary and Bacon | Dawn's Recipes

This bean goes by so many names: cranberry bean, shell bean or borlotti bean just to name a few. I prefer the name cranberry bean. It most captures the unique look of the gorgeous, mottled pods and the beauties that lie within. Sadly, they don’t retain their color when cooked, but they make up for their drab appearance with their creamy texture and nutty flavor – almost like chestnuts. … Continue Reading →

Kale and White Bean Soup

What do you know? I managed to get another recipe up after all. For those of you who don’t follow me on Facebook yet (why not??) I’ve said I probably won’t get many chances to update the blog for a while. Between my pregnancy and chasing after a toddler, I’m just too pooped most days to come up with anything new to post. I’m still sharing lots of ideas on my Facebook page, though. Sometimes they’re older recipes of mine that are seasonally appropriate, other times they’re links to wonderful recipes I’ve discovered elsewhere on the web. Meat and Bean Chili

I think I’m enjoying the winter CSA I joined even more than I enjoyed the summer/fall CSA. Both are great, but the winter version includes such items as locally raised meats, cheeses, milk, and even root beer in addition to the late harvest/cold storage fruits and veggies. Where does the time go? I’ve had so much going on in the past several weeks, I can barely remember my own name. In summary, I lost a grandfather, discovered my cat has cancer, and learned I was pregnant. I’m very happy about that last part, but not so much about the rest. I won’t get into details here, but for those of you interested, you may read more about those events on my other blog. Needless to say, with all that’s been going on, I haven’t had much time to get creative with my cooking. And now that things … Continue Reading →

I love the black bean soup at Panera, but I can’t always get to one. I decided to look online for a knock-off recipe and found a decent one on RecipeZaar. It’s not quite the same as the soup at Panera; Panera’s version is vegetarian and the one on RecipeZaar uses chicken bullion. I went one better and used beef stock. I also sautéed the veggies before adding the rest of the ingredients and spiced it all up with some cayenne pepper. Yum! It must have been good because, by the time I ladled out a bowl for myself and … Continue Reading →
