I’m not even sure where the original came from. What I do know is that it’s one of my husband’s favorite ways to eat vegetables. Since he thinks vegetables are an “optional” part of any meal, I do what I can to get him excited about them. While I was making this yesterday, my husband said the aroma took him back to his Italian grandmother’s kitchen. Simple foods from the earth, probably grown in their very own garden. With summer in full … Continue reading →

I’ve had so much going on in the past several weeks, I can barely remember my own name. In summary, I lost a grandfather, discovered my cat has cancer, and learned I was pregnant. I’m very happy about that last part, but not so much about the rest. I won’t get into details here, but for those of you interested, you may read more about those events on my other blog. Needless to say, with all that’s been going on, I haven’t had much time to get creative with my cooking. And now that things … Continue reading →

He “suggested” they would look great on anise cookies…hint, hint. Because I’m such a good wife, and because I like to get nice presents (heh heh), I decided to make some for the holidays. First I searched every recipe book I own (a lot!) and came up with nothing. Maybe they go by another name? Then I thought I could get the recipe from my mother-in-law, since we were supposed to get together over the weekend. Well, the nor’easter kept us snowed in … Continue reading →

Things have been pretty hectic for me lately, and I think I’ve spread myself a bit too thin. Over the next couple of months, my posts may be sporadic at best. I’m going to be going through in-vitro (more on that here) and, from what I’ve read, it’s no walk in the park. On the days when I’m feeling up to it, I’ll try to get some fresh content on here. Meanwhile, enjoy this 2-for-1 special! This is another one of my kick-backs from “back in the day” when I watched every thing I ate. I’m trying to get back into those good habits. Recipes like this one are a big help, because this is something I’d eat even if I wasn’t watching my weight. I found the original recipe in the October 1991 issue of Bon Appétit, but I wanted it even healthier. For one thing, I replaced the standard beef broth with the fat-free, … Continue reading →

Ralston. It may not look like much, but it is amazingly flavorful and surprisingly filling! I served it with fresh Italian bread, but next time I think I’ll serve it over penne. I only made the tiniest of changes to the recipe as it was given to me. I quartered and sliced the veggies instead of dicing them, just to make it look more interesting on the plate. (Ok, admittedly, you can’t tell in these photos. Hehe…) I also prefer tomato sauce from … Continue reading →

You don’t have to knead the dough. Just stir the ingredients together and let it rise in the fridge over night. This recipe is based on the one in Rose Levy Beranbaum’s The Bread Bible. I made some changes in the amount, because the original recipe makes a very small pizza. I also had no instant yeast, so I converted the recipe for use with active dry yeast instead. You can see more pizza photos using this recipe in my pizza party post. Use fresh oregano if you can find it; it really does make a world of difference. This sauce is based on the recipe in Rose Levy Beranbaum’s The Bread Bible. Since I like to cut my pizza into 8 slices, I based the nutritional information on a single-slice serving. Of course, you’re going to want to eat several slices of any pizza made with this sauce! Ingredients: 1 cup (8 ounces) canned crushed tomatoes, with their juices 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 large garlic clove, chopped 1/4 … Continue reading →

That’s not to say I didn’t have a recipe blog before then. I just didn’t have one with an easy-to-remember URL. It didn’t always have such nice pictures with the recipes, and there was no commentary at all. It was basically just my recipe collection in an internet accessible format. I did migrate all those recipes to this site at the onset, and I’m going through them as I have the time to add the missing pictures and commentary. Today I’m doing something a little different.
