Bacon Rose Bouquet | Dawn's Recipes

Firstly, let me apologize for not posting this before Valentine’s Day. I couldn’t very well make it in advance since I was giving it to my husband. I had to wait till he was at work today, otherwise the telltale aroma of bacon filling our house would have given it away. Plus, he reads my blog. If you’re not celebrating Valentine’s Day till the weekend, I’ve still got you covered. Otherwise, why not Pin this now and you’ll have it ready for next Valentine’s Day, or for Father’s Day, or for that special someone’s birthday? … Continue Reading →

Three Jars of Garlic Dill Refrigerator Pickles

This was a fun recipe to do. I actually started working on it last year when I got cucumbers and dill heads in my CSA share. I started out using this recipe, then I kept on playing with variations until I had it exactly the way I wanted it. The hard part was waiting a full month before first trying any of the pickles. Meanwhile I still had more fresh cucumbers coming in, and I wasn’t sure which version was the best one to pickle them with yet. I did seven variations in all, so I’m glad to finally be … Continue Reading →

Frozen Chicken Stock Beats Canned in Flavor and Convenience

Frozen Chicken Stock

I use chicken stock quite often when I cook. Whether I’m making soup, flavoring rice or potatoes, or braising vegetables, I always like to have some handy. I rarely seem to need an entire can of it, though, and it only keeps a few days once it’s opened. When I started making baby food for my daughter, I got into the habit of keeping home made chicken stock on hand. It was the only way I could be sure it didn’t contain too much sodium for her little kidneys to process. Not only do you benefit from knowing exactly what’s … Continue Reading →

Perfectly Cooked Bacon Without the Mess!

Bacon!

Pan-frying bacon is a good way to end up with grease splatters all over your stove. Those splatters are even less enjoyable when they splash your forearm. Grilling bacon imparts and excellent flavor, and it seasons your grill nicely too. It requires lots of attention, however, to avoid flare-ups resulting in black, crumbly strips. Microwaved bacon dries out too easily, leaving something that more closely resembles artificial bacon bins. I make my bacon in the oven. Not only does it eliminate the mess, but it doesn’t require much of my attention, leaving me free to get the rest of breakfast … Continue Reading →

Sugar Body Scrub

Looking for a fun, homemade gift idea? Sugar scrub is easy and inexpensive to make, and it’s sure to be a gift your friends will actually use. While this is not actually a food recipe, it is technically edible. I wouldn’t recommend eating it, as it wouldn’t taste very good, but it is comprised entirely of natural products. Being a full-time mom makes finding the time to get a pedicure quite challenging. The last couple of times I’d had a spa appointment, I went to a place that made their own sugar scrubs. They even offered daily “specials”…throwing things like … Continue Reading →
