Frozen Chicken Stock Beats Canned in Flavor and Convenience

Frozen Chicken Stock

I use chicken stock quite often when I cook. Whether I’m making soup, flavoring rice or potatoes, or braising vegetables, I always like to have some handy. I rarely seem to need an entire can of it, though, and it only keeps a few days once it’s opened. When I started making baby food for my daughter, I got into the habit of keeping home made chicken stock on hand. It was the only way I could be sure it didn’t contain too much sodium for her little kidneys to process. Not only do you benefit from knowing exactly what’s … Continue reading

Perfectly Cooked Bacon Without the Mess!

Bacon!

Pan-frying bacon is a good way to end up with grease splatters all over your stove. Those splatters are even less enjoyable when they splash your forearm. Grilling bacon imparts and excellent flavor, and it seasons your grill nicely too. It requires lots of attention, however, to avoid flare-ups resulting in black, crumbly strips. Microwaved bacon dries out too easily, leaving something that more closely resembles artificial bacon bins. I make my bacon in the oven. Not only does it eliminate the mess, but it doesn’t require much of my attention, leaving me free to get the rest of breakfast … Continue reading

Sugar Body Scrub

While this is actually not a food recipe, it is technically edible. I wouldn’t recommend eating it, as it wouldn’t taste very good, but it is comprised entirely of natural products. Being a full-time mom makes finding the time to get a pedicure quite challenging. The last couple of times I’d had a spa appointment, I went to a place that made their own sugar scrubs. They even offered daily “specials”…throwing things like mandarin oranges into the scrub. Really I think it was just a gimmick they used to justify charging so much, but who doesn’t love a little pampering? … Continue reading

Snow Ice Cream

It’s been a long time since I’ve updated this blog! It’s not dead, just sleeping. Since my last entry I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl named Angelina. She’s now nearly 9 months old, and I’m slowly learning to be a mom AND have time for all the extras in life…like this blog. I can’t guarantee I’ll update often, but I will do my best not to let this blog fade into the ether. Snow ice cream, or snow cream, is super easy to make. Here in New England, as in much of the country, we’re buried under an … Continue reading

Injectable Marinade or How to Fry a Turkey

Fried Turkey

This is the post I alluded to in the write-up for my Raspberry Lemonade recipe. If you’ve never had fried turkey before, prepare to be wowed. You can cook an entire turkey in under an hour. The skin is amazingly cripsy and flavorful, and the meat is wonderfully juicy. I like to throw cut up potatoes into the hot oil when the turkey is done. The seasoning from the turkey flavors the oil, and you get the most amazing french fries! Frying a turkey requires a few specialty items. I recommend purchasing a turkey fryer set, so you know everything … Continue reading
