He “suggested” they would look great on anise cookies…hint, hint. Because I’m such a good wife, and because I like to get nice presents (heh heh), I decided to make some for the holidays. First I searched every recipe book I own (a lot!) and came up with nothing. Maybe they go by another name? Then I thought I could get the recipe from my mother-in-law, since we were supposed to get together over the weekend. Well, the nor’easter kept us snowed in … Continue reading →

I wanted to do gingerbread cutouts, but I wasn’t sure they would arrive intact. I was flipping through a book called “Homemade Christmas” by Mary Harvey Gurley, when I saw the recipe for Mexican Wedding Cookies. I decided these would work for a couple of reasons. They are small and a bit firm, so they’re unlikely to arrive in pieces. Also, they look like little snowballs. My brother lives in a much warmer part of the country … Continue reading →

Delicious sugar cookies! Before I get to the recipe, let me mention a couple of important women’s issues that are particularly relevant this month. I don’t like raisins in my oatmeal cookies, but I do like nuts. I wanted something with a bit of cinnamon also. I was ready to find an okay recipe and modify it to my liking, but I was lucky enough to come across a near perfect recipe at JoyofBAKING.com. I didn’t make my cookies quite so large as indicated. (In the original recipe, they mention using an ice cream scoop!) I used a large cookie scoop, and ended up with … Continue reading →

Nikki has provided the perfect solution by choosing Easter candy as this month’s Master Baker ingredient. Keep an eye out for her recipe round-up at the beginning of April. There are bound to be recipes for just about every type of Easter candy imaginable! My favorite Easter candy is the Cadbury mini egg. These are the candy-coated, milk chocolate eggs, not the sickly sweet, creme-filled variety. (Sorry to any fans of the creme egg I may have offended!) I thought they’d be the perfect substitute for the chocolate … Continue reading →

I just finished reading From the Corner of His Eye by Dean Koontz. One of the characters proves to be most at home in the kitchen. At one point in the story he makes a batch of chocolate chip cookies with coconut and pecans for his sister. Wow…what a flavor combination! I immediately ran out to buy the chocolate chips and coconut I’d need, but just got around to actually making them tonight. This recipe makes about 2 dozen cookies but can easily be doubled. Ingredients: 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour … Continue reading →

Maybe it’s all that soaking, or all the butter and brown sugar and spices, or maybe it’s just the memory of my mom baking them when I was a kid. After passing through both her hands and mine, this recipe has changed from the original found in the American Family Cookbook. Just how much I can’t say, because I’ve never seen the original. Ingredients: 1 cup dark seedless raisins 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour 3/4 teaspoon baking soda … Continue reading →

The original recipe called for vanilla frosting, but I found it was too heavy for the light pastry and usually omitted it. Today I tried using a glaze designed for sugar cookies found McCormick.com, and now they taste just like the elephant ears I remember from my childhood. Both the pastries and the glaze are incredibly easy to make. Thawing the pastry sheets is the most time consuming part. … Continue reading →
