German Chocolate Cupcakes | Dawn's Recipes

Let me preface this post with a little confession: I am not a big fan of cake. This statement has actually brought forth such comments as, “How are we even friends?” Cake lovers are a very passionate people! My only defense is that I grew up around birthday cakes from grocery stores and wholesale clubs. Stale, bland cake with sickly sweet frosting. Yuck and yuck. It was not unusual for me to pass up the cake at my own party. … Continue Reading →

Chocolate Orgasms

There used to be a small bakery chain in my area called Rosie’s Bakery.  My favorite item from their shop was their chocolate orgasms.  They are incredibly rich, dense, fudgy brownies with a ganache-like frosting on top.  The name is no exaggeration, either.  One bite and you’ll be hooked. I was lucky enough to happen across a knock-off recipe for these decadent treats years ago.  I can no longer remember the original source.  These are so close to the original I no longer miss the bakery.  The original had walnuts, and that’s how I like them best.  You can swap … Continue Reading →

A Simple Coffee Cake

This is a recipe my mom made frequently when I was growing up. It’s from 1949 edition of Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book. Since my mom wasn’t yet born in 1949, I’d guess that my grandmother made it for her growing up too. At least, that’s how I like to imagine it. What I love about this recipe is that I can make it at a moments notice. None of the ingredients are fancy. I almost always have everything I need on hand. It also comes together very quickly. You can throw it together in the morning, and … Continue Reading →

Strawberry Shortcake

I’ve had a version of this recipe in my archives for some time, so I don’t remember where I first saw it.  Supposedly it comes from the June 2000 issue of Parade magazine.  I’ve made a few changes to it over the years, and I always get tons of compliments when I serve it. I prefer my strawberries on real shortcake – no spongecake or angel cake for me, thank you very much.  I need something that can stand up to all that juice.  These biscuits certainly fit the bill.  I’ve been told by a neighbor that they’re better than … Continue Reading →

Individual Chocolate Lava Cakes

lavacakefeature

What? Another lava cake recipes? Isn’t every recipe blogger doing that? Okay, okay. But this is the last part of my red-themed-anti-Valentine’s Day dinner, and I wanted to post it. There are many different ways to make this moist, delicious cake with a melty center. Sometimes the center is made separately from the rest of the cake, sometimes not. Either way, I’ve never met a lava cake I didn’t like (and that’s saying something since I’m generally not a cake fan). I found this recipe on the Ghirardelli web site. (Hey, I might as well go to the pros.) It … Continue Reading →
