Happy Birthday and a Pizza Party!

I started DawnsRecipes.com one year ago today. That’s not to say I didn’t have a recipe blog before then. I just didn’t have one with an easy-to-remember URL. It didn’t always have such nice pictures with the recipes, and there was no commentary at all. It was basically just my recipe collection in an internet accessible format. I did migrate all those recipes to this site at the onset, and I’m going through them as I have the time to add the missing pictures and commentary. Today I’m doing something a little different. I’d invited my dad over for lunch … Continue Reading →

Bread Pudding

Ah, bread pudding! It’s one of the classics. This is bread pudding the way my mom taught me to make it. It’s a favorite of my dad’s, and he’s been dropping hints lately. So, I finally got around to making it for him. With all my bread baking lately, you think I’d have tons of stale bread left over, but it doesn’t last that long. So I bought some from a bakery and left the bag open for a couple of days. I just used sliced white sandwich bread for this, but you really need to buy it from … Continue Reading →

Honey Wheat Bread

Updated This recipe, based on the one found at AllRecipes.com, is the first bread recipe I ever attempted. It came out okay the first time, but it was a little tough. It was years before I tried making bread again. Now that I’ve had more experience with breads, I decided to give it another whirl. I’m so glad I did! This bread is delicious, and I feel much less guilty about the carbs when I know the fiber and protein content are so high. Ingredients: 3/4 cup warm water 1 package active dry yeast 3/4 cup warm milk 2 … Continue Reading →

Italian Bread

I know, I know…another bread recipe. What can I say? I’m hooked. It’s so much fun to make, and I get such great feedback from my family. My grandfather actually tried to pay me to make him a loaf of raisin bread after my mom shared hers with him. And, no, of course I didn’t take the money. I was looking for a good Italian bread recipe, and none of my cookbooks (not even those all about bread) had what I wanted. I found a basic Italian bread recipe by Emeril on foodnetwork.com that came close. I made a few … Continue Reading →

Cinnamon-Raisin Swirl Bread with Crumb Topping

I’ve had so much fun with the Daring Bakers challenges that I’ve decided to participate in another monthly foodie event – The Master Bakers. The rules of this one are simpler, and allow for more creativity on my part. Nikki picks an ingredient, and we’re allowed to make any baked good we desire using that ingredient. This month’s ingredient is cinnamon. As it happens, making Julia Child’s French bread set me on a bread-baking frenzy. I bought myself a couple of books on the subject: Beard On Bread by James Beard and The Bread Bible by Rose Levy Beranbaum. The … Continue Reading →
