Both are great, but the winter version includes such items as locally raised meats, cheeses, milk, and even root beer in addition to the late harvest/cold storage fruits and veggies. Our most recent share included a pound of ground goat meat. If you’ve never had goat, it’s similar to but gamier than lamb. It can replace beef in just about any dish, and it stands up particularly well in spicier recipes. I decided to take inspiration from a bit by comedian Ron White … Continue reading →

What an incredible drink! The way the smoked sea salt played off the sweetness in the chocolate and caramel was music to my taste buds. I missed it dearly when it was gone and eagerly awaited its return the following year. It never came, and I fell into despair. Okay, not really, but I was sorely disappointed. This year, however, they did something even more amazing! Salted caramel mocha…just like the salted caramel hot chocolate, but with some of the sweetness cut with coffee. Yum! Around the same time … Continue reading →

Those splatters are even less enjoyable when they splash your forearm. Grilling bacon imparts and excellent flavor, and it seasons your grill nicely too. It requires lots of attention, however, to avoid flare-ups resulting in black, crumbly strips. Microwaved bacon dries out too easily, leaving something that more closely resembles artificial bacon bins. I make my bacon in the oven. Not only does it eliminate the mess, but it doesn’t require much of my attention, leaving me free to get the rest of breakfast … Continue reading →

After many good years together, my electric range went on to that big kitchen in the sky. My mourning period quickly ended when I realized I now had excuse to buy the gas range I’d been wanting. Yay! Of course I’m still without a stove until the replacement arrives and gets installed. Between the grill, the crock pot, the rice cooker and the electric wok, I think I’ll pull through. I decided I’d finally use that hambone that’s been taking up space in my freezer since Easter. This recipe is based on … Continue reading →

I was hoping to get at least one more recipe in before my recent trip to Walt Disney World, but time got away from me. I’d like to say it won’t happen again, but it probably will. I’ve been thinking up some new ideas for this site, though. I might start including some non-recipe (but still food related) posts. They’d focus on techniques I use in the kitchen, some of my most used gadgets, and things of that nature. I’d also like to start featuring some “guest” recipes, but more on that … Continue reading →

I think the only changes I’ve made are doubling the sauce so there’s extra to serve on the side (also great to have when reheating leftovers!) and using plastic wrap … Continue reading →

I’m too rushed to do more than reheat a frozen waffle (I’ll have that recipe posted soon!) or, in a pinch, grab a granola bar on my way out the door. So, when the weekend comes I like to do something special. If I have leftover ham, this hash is on the menu. It can also be made with corned beef instead of ham, but I can’t stand corned beef. It’s also good if you use bacon. Try to get slab bacon, or at least thick cut. That’s not to say I didn’t have a recipe blog before then. I just didn’t have one with an easy-to-remember URL. It didn’t always have such nice pictures with the recipes, and there was no commentary at all. It was basically just my recipe collection in an internet accessible format. I did migrate all those recipes to this site at the onset, and I’m going through them as I have the time to add the missing pictures and commentary. Today I’m doing something a little different. I’d invited my dad over for lunch … Continue reading →

It takes just a few minutes to throw the marinade together. Then you just throw it in the fridge to marinate until you’re ready to grill it. The longer it marinates, the more tender the meat, so try to make it a day ahead of time. Also, I find it hard to time grilled food for doneness. It really depends on how even your grill cooks, how windy it is outside, and several other factors. Save yourself a headache and use an instant read thermometer. The original recipe came from … Continue reading →

The Italian word “ossubuco” translates to “holed bone”. This preparation results in extremely tender meat. It literally falls off the bone. (I had to do a bit of reassembling for the photograph!) Until tonight, my only experience with osso buco was a bite I had of someone else’s dinner recently. My husband suggested I try making it some time, and when we saw the veal shanks at the butcher I knew that day would be soon. I looked around for some various methods on how to prepare the shanks I bought.
